Dear Search Associates Colleagues,

On behalf of Nanjing International School (NIS) Search Committee, we are pleased to announce that Dr. Thalia Nawi has been appointed as the new Director beginning in August 2027.

Dr. Nawi is currently in her fifth year as Deputy Superintendent at Stamford American International School in Singapore. Her previous leadership experience includes serving as Chief Strategy Officer at the National Center for Teacher Residencies, Senior Consultant at Education First Consulting, Director of the Denver Teacher Residency program for Denver Public Schools, and Principal in Seattle Public Schools.

She holds a Doctorate in Education Leadership from Harvard University, a Master of Education in Leadership and Policy Studies from the University of Washington, a California Teaching Credential from San Francisco State University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

The NIS Search Committee selected Dr. Nawi from a highly experienced and qualified group of candidates based on her considerable past leadership experience in education on a global level. Mr. Bram van Nunen, Chair of the NIS School Board, shared the following about Dr. Nawi’s candidacy and appointment: We were consistently impressed by Thalia during all selection stages, particularly with how she engaged and connected with the various community groups when she visited NIS. The Board is confident that Thalia brings the vision, leadership, and dedication needed to guide NIS into an exciting future. We look forward to working with her as we continue to strengthen our community and uphold the values that make NIS exceptional.

Dr. Nawi is eager to join NIS and looks forward to serving as the next Director. In response to her appointment, Dr. Nawi shared the following: I am genuinely honored to be selected as the next Director of NIS. During my visit, I felt a strong connection not only with the Board, but also with the staff, students, and wider school community. The sense of purpose and care across NIS was unmistakable. I am excited about the future we will build together and look forward to joining the community in 2027 to continue supporting every student.
